Muscle is actually water if you think 75% is water 20% is made out of protein and 5% fat. The muscles themselves are made out of fiber bundles which are made out of two proteins. These two proteins called actin and myosin slide against each other to produce energy.

The only way to build the size of a muscle is to increase the number and or size of the cells that contain protein. Protein is made with amino acids and without them your muscles would not work. Your muscles would not be able to build, maintain or repair muscle tissue without amino acids.

The protein cell consists of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen together with nitrogen. Amino acids rely on a positive nitrogen balance to be able to sustain themselves in an anabolic state. A negative nitrogen balance when your body needs energy fast means a catabolic state in your muscles and they are getting smaller.

Your body needs amino acids to sustain itself, it can manufacture some of them but not all. There are 9 essential amino acids that your body cannot make but they can be bought. Some of the foods we eat every day contain a complete protein, which means they contain all the 9 essential amino acids needed to build muscle: Meat, Eggs Fish and Milk plus Soy can all be purchased at the local store.

To get 100% absorption from a single source of protein one should eat whey protein powder and the experts tell us that to ensure you get a steady release of amino acids throughout the day you should eat whey protein in the morning. The legendary Bill Pearl was a vegetarian bodybuilder who taught himself how to mix legumes with seeds and milk products to create the 9 essential amino acids required for building muscle.

In conclusion, yes your muscles are made from protein but more importantly they are built and maintained by protein. The building blocks of protein are the 9 essential amino acids. Most bodybuilders try to eat 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight which depending on your body-weight should be done in a series of meals taken every 2 or 3 hours having 30 to 40 grams of protein with each meal.
